Until we awaken it seems like we are just coasting through life. Sure, we have major decisions to make throughout our life – where to go to college, choosing our friends, where will we live, but somewhere along the way we start to operate from our heart.
What does that mean exactly?
It means that something inside of us is prompting us to go somewhere, to do something, to align with someone or to let go of something or someone. Over the years, I’ve noticed that I haven’t always navigated this part as gracefully as I could have. I’ve said “I’m done” with people and that’s that. I close the door once that decision is made. I may look back on occasion and mull over things that happened, but I never doubt that decision. In fact, usually I ask myself why did I stay as long as I did. I try not to beat myself up in those instances.
Over the last few years, I’ve noticed this happen time and time again, where this inner voice inside me is saying “no” and I’m at the point in my life where I’ve done enough inner work to just not care about the ramifications. I think sometimes this is an age thing and sometimes it’s a soul thing. As we mature, we tend to put up with BS less and less.
I think it’s only when we get quiet, when we start to question things (awaken), or have something happen – such as a traumatic event – job loss, divorce, or death that we tune inwards and check in with our heart space, our soul – what does it want?
From what I’ve observed, the heart wants authenticity. The heart wants to expand, the heart wants to be excited, to feel joy. When we settle into our lives, we tend to operate from comfort, security and a sense of routine. And there is definitely comfort in that. Who wants to upend their life when there is no clear path forward? But the heart knows what it wants, and it will keep on knocking at your mind’s door until you answer it. This could be anything – from picking back up a hobby that has been pushed aside, changing jobs, ending relationships, to minor tugs – such as taking a walk in nature, or enjoying a warm bath and nurturing self-love.
Why does this even matter? Well, because we didn’t come here to play small. The heart in an expanded state is actually very powerful. If we continue to not listen to our heart, our life stays small, we may feel a sense of frustration or even feel depressed. I’m sure that you have met people who are living their ‘dream lives’ doing exactly what they wanted to do. It could be tracking an obscure monkey in the jungle. But those people are happy, covered in mud and rain and they are grinning ear to ear. They followed their heart’s calling, and their energy shows it. While we always tend to focus on ‘doing’ I’m sure you can also remember instances in your past where you came across someone who just seemed to emit this magical kind of energy. I can remember an older gentleman in front of me – checking out a grocery store. He seemed so calm, so kind, so grounded. He stood out to me and that has probably been 20 years ago. At the time, I had no understanding of what it was about that guy, but looking back, I can clearly see his heart was in an expanded state. He didn’t necessarily have to do anything, he was just happy. His heart was content.
The cool thing about following the heart, is that it isn’t a ‘sorry you missed out on that boat’ type of thing. It’s a constant check-in and refinement of what the heart wants. Does the heart want to continue being in this relationship? Does the heart want to continue sitting at this desk all day? Does the heart want to continue being in this friendship? It’s something that evolves over time. And over the years, I’ve finally come to an understanding that I need to follow my heart, no matter the consequence. To me, it is about authenticity. The more that we align with our heart, the more life flows, more opportunities appear, we receive more smiles, good things just start to happen to us naturally. Synchronicities just seem to keep on coming.
Are you living from your heart? Where are you being pulled towards? The heart knows – follow it.
