What is it about death that makes us stop in our tracks? It’s like everything in our world takes a back seat and we are faced with these hard emotions that come front and center and are forced upon us whether we like it or not. I’ve experienced grief from losing family members as well as pets and it always causes me to stop and take a deeper look at life. What am I doing? Am I the best person I can be? Am I showing up the best for others? Everything comes up closer for scrutiny. You start to question things in your life.
But the death of my pet bunny Sage happened at the right time for me to be able to learn the lesson from her death. I got Sage and her sister Cinnamon in September of 2018. They had been previously owned by someone who did not know how to take care of them and had kept them in plastic storage containers from Target that they had cut holes in. Once I saw that picture, I couldn’t take it and offered to give them a good home. Back at my home, they lived together in what was once an unused dining room which had been converted to “The Bunnies Room.” They lived there together peacefully until March 2025, when Sage started to show signs of illness. I walked into their room and noticed one of Sage’s eyes was white. I had originally thought that maybe she had been burned from sun exposure, since I do keep the curtains open where they can get sunshine. I took her to the vet and they said it could be, but the other possibility was an infection caused by E. cuniculi. They said to test for it was going to be about $500 and then the medications had possible adverse effects, so I decided against it.
Not long after that, I noticed when she tried to eat, her motor coordination was off and she was not able to chew. I looked up E.cuniculi and read the symptoms and realized that she did have this illness and there really wasn’t anything for me to do. I knew that it was her time. Over the next two days I monitored her, set up crystals around her, sent her healing energy and watched her sister Cinnamon comfort her. I had gone into meditation asking if I should take her into the vet to be put down or to let her die in her own home. The answer that I received was for her to be with her sister and in her home. On Sunday, I set up a small pen and covered it with sheets to prevent predators. I put out a small cardboard box for them to hide in and some water. It was near a birdfeeder, so Sage could watch the birds and hear them sing under a blue sky and perfectly beautiful day. I was out there off and on, checking on them, adjusting the covers to make sure she wasn’t in the sun. Around 4 pm, she had a small seizure and she died outside, in nature, with me and her sister Cinnamon. Death is always hard and especially watching someone die takes it to another level.
All I knew was that I wanted to be there for her, no matter how hard it was for me. Before she passed away, I had sat in meditation asking my spirit guides for answers as I, as usual, was having a hard time with the thought of her dying. The information that my spirit guides gave to me offered me solace in understanding the ebb and flow of life.
I will share what they shared with me rather than try to summarize it:
“We feel your pain. The loss of a companion of the animal kingdom is always hard because of their genuine nature. We understand and empathize with you. The suffering too is something of the life experience that causes one to pause. It is not always as it seems, as in truth Love does conquer all. As you sit and place your hands upon the bunny, she does feel the love and healing efforts upon her body and we highly recommend you do so when you feel called to. She is at peace at a soul level and once this is accomplished, there really is no true suffering. All life is energy in different forms and as you share your energy with her, she does feel it’s love and peace washes over her. We do commend you for providing her a safe and happy home and she does love you back tremendously. While it is sad, do keep in mind it’s her will and choice to surrender to a new life experience. You will encounter her again in another life form and the recognition will be there. We love you.”
Even though we can know that we are just consciousness and that we don’t truly ever die, it doesn’t lessen the pain that we feel when they leave our 3D world. However, this is the first time that I’ve lost a pet where the idea that they will go on to a new life experience has brought me some peace.
I believe that everything has consciousness and the thought of my bunny continuing to grow at a soul level is something that I hadn’t really considered, and it made me glad thinking that she would move onto something new and exciting in her next life. I am not sure what the evolution of a soul for a bunny might be, but I know she is a goodhearted soul and wherever her next lifetime is, I’m sure it will be a good one!
After my bunny did pass, I reached out again in the throes of my even deeper grief and received profound information that really made me view things in a different light and really helped me process things on an even deeper level.
I will quote exactly what they told me as I don’t think I would do it justice to try to summarize it.
I asked this question. “My bunny Sage just died. I am so sad. What is the point of this life? Why have pets and then they die. Why do we create this reality of heartache when they leave us?”
They responded:
“We draw upon your attention the crescent moon. It is just a sliver of light and yet you know that there is more to it than what is visible. Such is this life. You see the world, you live in is one reality, but in reality there is more that is just not visible. It is in this understanding that you gather the wisdom that will help you pierce through this veil of illusion because that is exactly what it is. Once you see this TRUTH, you cannot go back because you understand the illusory nature of this planet and incarnation. We understand your loss as what appears to be no more however that is not the case and as you open your eyes to the true reality you will see it only as love that pierces the veil of all existence and stands through time as love is evermore.”
Me – “How do I move through with the loss of their presence?”
Their response:
“It is always through loss that you are forced with the lack of appreciation of what currently is and so therefore in your contrast you create the opposite state which is what you want so you can level up in your understanding of all that is. It is by your contrast through this world that you gain perspective and appreciation of all that is and focus on the love of all that is. It seems as if we walk around as zombies until we awaken due to depth of emotion, death, divorce, job loss.
These pivot us into the new reality that we want to create of ever more appreciation until it is only love that we see through these various contrasts. The key is to not wait until you have the event before you see the presence of love in all that is and when you do, the world opens before you, as all in the world understands you and responds to your love in a favorable manner. The world becomes a magical place once the key of love is opened. The fairies come out, the trees talk, nature walks with you in a grand way. The colors turn brighter, and your world expands 1000-fold as you embody this love that you have received through the contrast of “loss.” It was always there lying dormant within.
Once cracked open, it will never shut.
Sage was that for you. She passed at a pivotal point in your life so that you could snap out of your complacency and leap forward on your spiritual journey. We always want to think “it’s just a bunny” just an animal, but as you hold the keys and codes of connections to many realms, – including those of the furry variety, they in kind respond by assisting you in your life. She passed so as to remind you that life is short and to live. She came into your life as a lesson of love as she is all love and she is happily with us now in her new environment of pure love as you also upleveled her in her spiritual journey through your role as care taker. She always loved you and continues to hold heart space for your kindness to her.
She is at one with the One, whole, loved and in her being she sends her love to you as you will see a pink bunny and it will be a reminder to you of her love for you. She sends her blessing and gratitude for participating in her soul journey.”
This information was truly a gift for me – and I’m sharing it in hopes that you can also see the beauty and feel some comfort if and when you also find yourself in grief. As I’m typing this from my journal, I’m glad that I am re-reading it as it is profound and something that I probably need to spend more time in contemplation with.
The next day, as I was journaling my personal feelings, trying to process my grief, I was processing what information that my guides had given me and was summarizing that they brought to my attention that the crescent moon and how we only see a sliver, but in reality there is more of what we see. And how death makes you see the world differently – through appreciation and how you step greater into love and once you pierce the veil of understanding, more beauty in the world opens up.
It’s like through the world of love, life opens up in a whole new way. That life responds accordingly and that Sage gave me that gift!
As I was writing that – I realized that Sage means wisdom! I had subconsciously chosen the name “Sage” and she is the one that gave me wisdom! What a precious gift she was after all!
Later, I had decided to commemorate her life by buying a rabbit pendant. As I got on Amazon and searched “bunny pendants”, if you can believe it – a bunny pendant sitting on a crescent moon showed up!
And one final synchronous event happened when I buried my dear bunny in the backyard. As I placed her body in a shallow grave, I decided to use a small white towel to cover her body. As I did, I realized that the tag on the towel said “Thyme and Sage”!
Time and Sage….
I will see Sage another Time, I know. Until then I will keep her close to my heart and follow the guides advice in appreciation and following the Sage advice I was given.
Update: A few weeks later, I came across a pink bunny – just like they said I would! I was so happy to see this!

In love, light and gratitude,
Heather
